May is finally here and that means summer is right around the corner! A breath of fresh air after a chilly winter and rainy spring and the perfect time to sparkle in your favorite pieces of jewelry! But, with that brilliant sunshine comes that all too familiar South Louisiana heat and humidity. Between sweat, beach trips, and lounging poolside, your jewelry is bound to see it all this summer. So, let’s make sure you’re ready to give it the proper care it deserves! Here's a short little entry for taking care of those precious items.
Despite how many times I tell people to not wear their jewelry to bed, showering, working out, lawn care, etc. people will do it anyways and we all know this. But, please, I’ll say it one more time: take off your precious jewels if you’ll be getting a little sweaty! A jewelry box is your best friend, perfect to keep your items organized and make sure those chains and necklaces don’t get tangled (but if they do, just bring them by and we can undo that little knot for you). But, if you decide to go against my words of wisdom and want to be pretty while working in the garden or laying out at the beach, here’s some good ways to take care of your jewelry at home.
Regardless of what items you have–14 karat gold, sterling silver, platinum–warm water, a bit of dish soap, and a soft toothbrush can do wonders for jewelry. Let the items soak for a bit before giving a light scrub with the toothbrush, let them air dry or give a gentle pat with a towel. Some gemstones in particular are more sensative to chemicals, opals and pearls especially, so if you'll be cleaning or working with harsh chemicals it is best to remove those items to avoid potential changing of color.
